La Pedrera - Barcelona

Casa Milá or "La Pedrera" is one of Barcelona's architectural jewels. Designed and contructed by Antoni Gaudí between 1906-1912 on the upscale Passieg de Gràcia, it's a stunning achievement with its flowing lines and innovative (for the time) construction. See a couple of snaps of the roof below.

On the fourth floor of the building is a permanent exhibition called "The Pedrera Apartment." This is a recreation of one of the apartments that actually existed in the early 20th century. Although not quite as breathtaking as the building's main architectural elements, the bathroom shown above nevertheless shows off some of Gaudí's mosaic floor tiling and mouldings.

This entry to my "Men's Room" collection is a little tangential since it's not truly for Men only, but I think it still qualifies as a well-appointed WC refuge. Don't you love the green walls and the copper tanks and tubes? And check out the device on the cabinet at far right!

ABOVE: Ever see a roof like this? It's called the Terrace, and it includes three types of constructions: the badalots (staircases), the ventilation towers, and the chimneys. Some are covered with trencadís (broken pieces of ceramic). The undulating balustrades conform to the shape of the facade, as Gaudi sought a harmonic solution between the rhythms of the facade and the finishings of the roof. (The story is that George Lucas visited this same roof before he created Star Wars. Notice any simularities?)
