Digital Art Week Presented by Councilmember Michael Zucchet
July 28, 2003
WHEREAS, the spirit of art flourishes in new media and new technology; and
WHEREAS, digital art visualizes the future of digital creativity beyond the postmodern mosaic of current reality; and
WHEREAS, since its inception, digital art has become a part of, and seeks to energize, contemporary art; and
WHEREAS, this year, the 30th anniversary of Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques (SIGGRAPH) celebrates with a conference featuring a provocative exhibit of digital sculpture, video, prints, and animation by 21st-century artists; and
WHEREAS, SIGGRAPH 2003, sponsored by ACM SIGGRAPH, is the 30th international conference on computer graphics and interactive techniques, which will bring nearly 25,000 computer professionals from six continents to San Diego for the week-long conference, July 25-31 at the Convention Center; and
WHEREAS, in conjunction with SIGGRAPH 2003 Art Gallery, the San Diego digital art community has numerous art shows, forums, and free digital art training events planned throughout the city located at Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, San Diego Art Institute, San Diego Center for the Moving Arts/Digital Art Guild, San Diego Photoshop Users Group, San Diego State University School of Art, Design and Art History, San Diego City Public Library, San Diego County Office of Education, The Art Institute of California-San Diego, Joseph David Gallery, and American Institute of Graphic Arts; and
WHEREAS, the efforts of local artists reflect their desire to further the acceptance of digital art as a new form of contemporary art and to educate the community on the tools and techniques available for digital art; and
WHEREAS, the digital art community invites all to envision the convergence of design and technology, art and animation, entertainment, education, and research at the SIGGRAPH 2003 Conference and San Diego community digital art shows; NOW THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED, by the Mayor and Council of the City Of San Diego, that this Council, for and on behalf of the citizens of San Diego, does hereby recognize SIGGRAPH 2003 and the digital artists and institutions of San Diego for their efforts to make art interesting, accessible and fun, and heartily congratulates SIGGRAPH 2003 and the local digital art community.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that July 25-31 be recognized as Digital Art Week in San Diego.
