PRESS RELEASE:
HP TRANSFORMS COLOR EXPERIENCE FOR GRAPHICS PROFESSIONALS WITH HP DESIGNJET Z PHOTO PRINTER SERIES
9/30/06 - (9/26/06) HP today announced it is changing the way graphics professionals create large-format images with the unveiling of the HP Designjet Z Photo Printer Series.
Continuing to expand its professional printing portfolio, HP is leveraging its pigment ink technologies developed for the HP Photosmart Pro B9180 to create the first large-format printers employing HPıs Scalable Printing Technology.
The HP Designjet Z Photo Printer Series is designed to deliver intuitive, dependable and repeatable color accuracy for 24- and 44-inch museum-quality prints with 200 years' photo permanence.(1)
"The HP Designjet Z Photo Printer Series enables photographers, graphic designers and artists to print their vision accurately and consistently," said Enrique Lores, vice president and general manager, Inkjet Commercial Division, HP. "With our breakthrough color management features, graphics professionals can now leverage a truly intuitive and automated printing process that expands both their business opportunities and their creative boundaries."
Experience simple and intuitive color management
The HP Designjet Z Photo Printer Series employs the industry's first embedded spectrophotometer, utilizing Eye-One Color Technology from GretagMacbeth/X-rite. Mounted on the printer carriage with completely self-contained optics and electronics, the embedded spectrophotometer greatly simplifies accurate color-matching, enabling automated ICC profiling and HP Advanced Closed-Loop Color Calibration. The result means the user can create color profiles in minutes rather than hours and expect exact color matches throughout the printing process.
Leading brands in the creative community, including Adobe, Colorbyte, EFI, GMG and GretagMacbeth/X-rite, have worked closely with HP to develop solutions optimized specifically for the HP Designjet Z Photo Printer Series to fully address the needs of key markets, such as graphic design, professional photography, prepress and digital fine arts. From GretagMacbeth/X-rites's Eye-One Color Technology to the use of Adobe's Lightroom calibration application, these solutions further streamline workflow and provide users a simple, reliable printing experience.
The HP Designjet Z Photo Printer Series color management partner tools include:
* The embedded spectrophotometer, built on GretagMacbeth/X-rite's leading Eye-One color technology.
* HP's Advanced Profiling Solution,(2) co-developed with GretagMacbeth, provides additional options for profiling and calibration. Integrated with the HP embedded spectrophotometer, this solution includes a monitor calibrator and profiler with editing capabilities to offer an end-to-end color-managed workflow.
* EFI's RIP Designer Edition 5.1,(2) developed with HP-specific inputs, is the latest version of EFI Designer Edition. New photo features and an improved user interface give graphic designers full control over digital proofing needs, saving users time and money.
* Imageprint v.6 photo RIP from Colorbyte and ColorProof v.4 prepress RIP from GMG, also developed with HP-specific inputs. The Imageprint v.6 is optimized for use by prosumers and professional photographers. The ColorProof v.4 works directly with the embedded spectrophotometer for print verification, radically shortening workflow.
* The HP ProPrint Plug-in and the "Calibrate Printer" button in Adobe Lightroom, co-developed with Adobe. Print expected colors on the first try from Adobe Photoshop with the free HP ProPrint Plug-in, and use the Adobe Lightroom "Calibrate Printer" button to launch the color management tools directly from within the application.
New ink and media for exquisite museum quality that lasts 200 years(1)
The HP Designjet Z2100 features an eight-color HP Vivera pigment ink system, including both matte black and photo black inks, providing a broad color gamut on matte fine art papers and glossy photo papers for photographic and creative design applications.
The HP Designjet Z3100 uses a 12-ink HP Vivera pigment ink system, including the HP 70 Gloss Enhancer and HP Quad-Black Inks to create beautiful black and white prints and achieve truly neutral grays under different lighting conditions. This also provides continuous tones, uniform gloss and rich blacks, making the HP Designjet Z3100 ideal for high-quality art reproduction, photography and proofing applications.
Both models deliver the industry's best photo permanence on a wide variety of HP media up to 24- or 44-inches wide.
"With the HP Designjet Z Photo Printer Series, we have color prints that are as good as, and in some cases superior to, traditional media and normal color C-prints. It's a win-win situation for us," said Thomas Hoepker, photographer, Magnum Photographers. "We have better color. We have a wider gamut. We have total control over it. We don't have to send it out to a dark room specialist. We do it at home and we have this long lifespan."
With the HP Designjet Z Photo Printer Series, graphics professionals have the ability to print beyond the limits of traditional papers using the widest range of media options on the market. With 11 new media offerings, users have the flexibility to choose from more than 30 media options within HP's media portfolio.
HP also announced a strategic alliance with Hahnemuehle FineArt, the 400-year-old pioneer in developing and producing fine art paper. In addition to co-developing three fine art papers, HP Hahnemuehle Smooth Fine Art Paper, HP Hahnemuehle Textured Fine Art Paper and HP Hahnemuehle Watercolor Paper, Hahnemuehle's entire portfolio of digital fine art media types is compatible with the HP Designjet Z2100/3100, providing customers a complete and reliable printing solution with the ultimate media choice and flexibility. Profiles of Hahnemuehle's 21 fine art papers are available at www.hahnemuehle.com.
In addition, the HP Designjet Z Photo Printer Series' automated color management features have opened doors to more media options. Leveraging relationships with strong brands like Hahnemühle, the HP Designjet Z Photo Printer Series can quickly create ICC profiles for the most relevant commercially available media.
New tools and services make printing even easier
Backing the HP Designjet Z Photo Printer Series' superior color experience are a variety of HP services and support options that give users greater confidence in their printing. Users can rely on the HP Color Center tool for step-by-step instruction on color management and HP Color Expert Service for a single point of contact for remote live assistance to resolve color issues in the workflow. From setup to media profiling, fine-tuning to finishing tips, HP ensures a flawless, straightforward printing experience for novices to professionals every step of the way.

PRESS RELEASE:
CANON SERVES UP A TRIPLE-THREAT LARGE FORMAT LINE-UP NOW OFFERING THREE 12-COLOR WIDE FORMAT PRINTERS IN 17-, 44-, AND 60-INCH WIDTHS
9/30/06 - (9/26/06) Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leading provider of office imaging systems, inkjet technology and digital photography equipment, today unveiled the new 12-color imagePROGRAF iPF8000 pigment ink large format printer. Designed to produce stunning color for professional quality giclee prints and photographs, the iPF8000 utilizes Canon's proprietary LUCIA pigment inks to print borderless images up to 42-inches wide, with a maximum paper width of 44-inches at amazing production speeds with outstanding archival image quality. The iPF8000 debuts at SGIA, (Booth #0534) September 26th, in Las Vegas.
Canon's Graphic Arts line of large format printers now includes the imagePROGRAF iPF5000, iPF8000, and iPF9000 printers at 17-, 44-, and 60-inches wide respectively. This expands Canon's large format portfolio which includes their recently announced Corporate and CAD line of large format print solutions. The new iPF8000 printer joins its two sister products by offering an extremely wide color gamut with a full 12-color inkset featuring LUCIA pigmented inks, along with the L-COA processor to quickly and accurately process high resolution image data.
With a maximum print resolution of 2400 x 1200 dpi, the new iPF8000 is ideal for color professionals with large-format printing needs, such as professional photographers, digital artists, graphic designers, commercial printers for proofing, print-for-pays, tradeshow exhibit builders, and signage shops. Advanced professional features such as automatic clogged nozzle detection and compensation for reliability, 330ml and 700ml selectable ink capacity sizes for versatility, a large, backlit LCD panel for ease of use, and ink usage tracking for accountability are all part of the new iPF8000 to satisfy every color professionals' large format printing needs.
"With a range of printer sizes and various media options, the iPF line of large format printers allows digital imaging professionals to choose the solution that will best render their images in the size, tone, and color that they desire for optimal viewing and display," said Tod Pike, senior vice president, Imaging Systems Group, Canon U.S.A., Inc. "The 44-inch imagePROGRAF iPF8000 printer strategically rounds out our line of 12-color large format printers."
The iPF8000 printer uses Red, Blue, Green, Gray, Photo Gray, Cyan, Photo Cyan, Magenta, Photo Magenta, Yellow, Regular Black, and Matte Black LUCIA pigment inks. The 12 ink colors enable the iPF8000 printer to render magnificent color and neutral, stable grayscales. Like its two sister products, the iPF8000 printer loads all 12 ink tanks at once and automatically switches between Regular Black and Matte Black inks, helping to eliminate wasted ink and the downtime of swapping out ink tanks. Each printer is shipped with a set of twelve 330ml LUCIA ink cartridges, and the users have an option to use 700ml large capacity ink cartridges to optimize efficiency.
In order to achieve the level of productivity required by print professionals, the iPF8000 is equipped with a countless number of time-saving features. The printer loads heavy roll paper from the front, eliminating the need to move the printer when changing paper, and the printer is capable of having the ink tank replaced without the need to stop the carriage, allowing for true uninterrupted operation. Additional features such as job log report total ink usage to a tenth of a milliliter and media usage in fractions of square feet to help make managing the running cost effortless. A larger LCD panel with instructional illustrations helps guide users through printer operation with minimal training.
As the last link in the image processing chain, the L-COA processor intelligently interprets image data, directing the fast printing process. Combined with Canon's dual print head design and the most ink nozzles per color in the industry, the L-COA processor helps achieve print speeds of under seven minutes for 33.1" x 46.8" (A0) size prints with 1200x1200 dpi resolution on a glossy photo paper. The iPF8000 printer's abundant number of nozzles and automatic clogged nozzle detection compensates if a nozzle becomes clogged by having other nozzles pull double-duty. This not only contributes to the printer's speed and accuracy but also helps reduce wear-and-tear on the print heads, increasing the reliability of the printer.
To make the state-of-the-art capability of the hardware even more accessible to users, the new iPF8000 comes with Print Plug-in for Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) for Macintosh OS(R) and Windows(R), a professional-level photo printing tool to allow printing of 16-bit RGB files, and PosterArtist (for Windows only), an easy-to-use sign and poster creation program, Digital Photo Print Pro (for Windows only), a digital photo correction and layout program. The printer driver for Macintosh(R) and Windows(R) includes a new feature called "Free Layout", in which the users can freely lay out print images from various applications on roll fed paper to maximize media usage.
The new iPF8000 printer offers digital printing professionals with a wide variety of media substrates ranging from fine art and photographic paper and canvas to banner and signage material. The variety of media available for the new iPF8000 provides the versatility and flexibility to complete any number of industry applications.
The imagePROGRAF iPF8000 printer will be available through authorized Canon U.S.A. dealers in October 2006 with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $5,995.

More About the Epson Stylus Pro 3800
Designed to exceed all expectations in the area of photographic image quality, the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 incorporates several new technologies and performance advancements for the most discerning professionals, which include:
* New Auto-Sharing Black Ink Technology: Breakthrough print head allows the printer to automatically switch between photo and matte black inks, providing virtually seamless transition times and greater conservation of black inks.
* Epson UltraChrome K3 Ink Technology: Using only eight individual cartridges at a time, Epson UltraChrome K3 inks incorporate high-density color pigments that produce the highest overall color gamut and fidelity among virtually any pigment-based inkjet printer in the industry. A high-gloss Microcrystal Encapsulation(TM) resin chemistry is also used to create prints with greater scratch resistance and reduced gloss differential.
* Three-Level Black Ink System: In addition to cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan, and light magenta, Epson UltraChrome K3 features a unique three-level black ink system that simultaneously uses black, light black and light-light black inks to produce professional quality black-and-white prints that rival traditional silver halide. This technology is designed to create professional neutral and toned black and white prints without color crossover, metamerism or bronzing.
* New Screening Technology: Debuting a mathematical breakthrough from Epson, the printer features an entirely new, radical screening algorithm that consistently places droplets precisely, producing smoother tonal transitions and greater detail from highlights to shadows.
* High-Performance Engine Speeds: The extreme precision of the Epson Stylus Pro print engine delivers a 16"x 20" photo lab-quality print (using 1,440 x 720 dpi - High Speed mode) in as fast as five minutes, 32 seconds -- more than 20 percent faster than the Epson Stylus Pro 4800.(1)

* Flexible Media Handling: Accommodating a variety of media in cut-sheet form between 4"x6" and 17"x22", including BorderFree(R) printing up to 16"x20", the printer offers three different ways to load media -- a high-capacity paper tray (120 sheets), top-loading manual tray optimized for fine art media and a front-loading, straight-through path capable of handling media up to 1.5 mm thick.
* Print Longevity: Prints created with the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 are predicted to resist fading up to 108 years for color prints and more than 200 years for black and white prints on specific Epson papers.(2)
* New Sleek and Compact Design: Weighing in at only 43 pounds, the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 features a new compact design and narrow depth. Compared to the Epson Stylus Pro 4800, the dimensions and weight are reduced by 30 and 51 percent, respectively.
* Connectivity Flexibility: For added versatility, the Epson Stylus Pro 3800 ships standard with 10/100 BaseT Ethernet and USB 2.0 connectivity.

8/24/06 - (8/14/06) Having long established its reputation for the production of market-leading black-and-white photographic paper, ILFORD Photo has now taken the whole genre onto a new level of archival and presentational excellence with the fusion of modern digital technology and true silver gelatine printing.
ILFORD Photo has announced the addition of a new paper to its range of specialist black-and-white photo products, which not only represents a major step forward in the production of high quality images, but also utilises the latest advances in digital processing.
Called ILFORD GALERIE FB DIGITAL, this 315gsm fibre base baryta paper has been created for printing with digital laser printers, and is compatible with digital printers such as the Durst Lambda and Océ Lightjet models.
This is the only paper in the world which utilises ILFORD Photo's renowned fibre base baryta material, made famous by such products as Ilfobrom Galerie FB and Multigrade IV FB papers, with the ability to be exposed in digital laser printers (Lightjet and Lambda) writing directly from digital files.
The optimised spectral sensitivity of ILFORD GALERIE FB DIGITAL, combined with the proven long term archival benefits of traditional fibre base black-and-white papers, provides the opportunity to create genuine silver gelatine prints from digital images. This unique combination makes ILFORD GALERIE FB DIGITAL the ideal choice for exhibition and fine art prints.
Initially being supplied in 100ft (30.5m) rolls in 20, 30, 40 and 50ins (51, 77, 102 and 127cm) widths for high-end prolab use, ILFORD GALERIE FB DIGITAL has been undergoing rigorous testing by a select handful of labs in North America and Europe.
Each lab has been extremely impressed at the quality prints which have been achieved, and is already recommending this paper for clients such as fine art collectors, museums, art galleries, photographers producing limited edition prints, and graphic design agencies.
"For the first time, fine art photographers can benefit from the best of both worlds," says ILFORD Photo chairman Phil Harris. "This unique product brings together the added creative benefits offered by digital manipulation, with the long established aesthetic and archival properties of true baryta base black-and-white silver gelatin prints."
Being launched at Photokina, ILFORD GALERIE FB DIGITAL will also be demonstrated via a series of exhibitions in the UK, Europe and the USA later in the year through to early 2007.

PRESS RELEASE:
BREATHING COLOR ANNOUNCES ALLURE RAG 285GSM 100% COTTON SEMI-GLOSS FINE ART
PAPER
7/18/06 - (7/1/06) Breathing Color, Inc. is proud to announce the release of the Allure Rag
285gsm fine art inkjet paper. The Allure Rag is a 100% cotton premium grade
fine art paper with a semi-gloss surface, and is specially designed for
high-end giclée reproductions that require exceptional color gamut and
archivability. Allure Rag uniquely allows digital printmakers to reproduce
fine art and photography on a heavyweight fine art paper that is
manufactured with a pre-applied semi-gloss coating.
Allure Rag achieves great detail and depth and should be used to print both
black and white images as well as color images. Allure Rag allows for
extraordinarily dense blacks with a measured Dmax of over 2.0. The Allure
Rag is designed for pigment inks such as the Epson UltraChrome, and the new
K3 inks, but will also work well with dye based inks such as those currently
used by Hewlett-Packard. It is available in all roll sizes from 13" to 60"
in width as well as cut sheets.
The current semi-gloss, 100% cotton fine art papers on the market are costly
to manufacture and are therefore traditionally priced over $2 per square
foot. Through its direct distribution model, Breathing Color offers Allure
Rag at competitive prices as low as $1.30 USD per square foot depending on
roll sizes and quantity purchased. Allure Rag therefore provides a new
opportunity for digital printmakers who before could not justify using this
new category of products due to its abnormally high cost.
Nick Friend, Breathing Color's President further explained, "the Allure Rag
and its semi-gloss inkjet receptive coating delivers a dmax value that has
never before been accomplished on a traditional 100% cotton fine art paper.
Allure Rag's performance once again represents our ongoing commitment to
deliver cutting edge products at market leading prices."
