L'ACADéMIE DES BEAUX-ARTS S'OUVRE à LA PHOTOGRAPHIE
THE ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS OPENS UP TO PHOTOGRAPHY
[English text follows]

THE ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS OPENS UP TO PHOTOGRAPHY

As the ultimate honor, photography made its entrance under the cupola of the Institute of France, finally recognized as an art by all the academicians after more than ten years of discussion. On Wednesday, May 31, the Academy of the Fine Arts elected two new members--the photographers Lucien Clergue and Yann Arthus-Bertrand--to constitute a new section dedicated to photography. The election changed to 57 (plus 16 foreign associate members) the members of the Academy and to 8 its sections: painting, music, sculpture, architecture, audio-visual, engraving, members free (personalities of the world of the culture), and photography.

The Academy had received seven spontaneous nominations, including that of the cinematographer and photographer Raymond Depardon and that of fashion photographer Domenica Issermann. With Lucien Clergue (71 years) and Yann Arthus-Bertrand (60 years), the institution finally chose two notables of photography; two strong and appreciated personalities with the general public, but whose work is questioned and debated by the photography world.

The first, Lucien Clergue of Provence--verbose and a major activist of the fixed image--is the cofounder of the Arles Photography Festival. He became known in France and in the United States, starting in 1950, by expressionist photographs of the Camargue, bulls and female nudes. Elected on the first round, he exulted: "I wanted to be the first photographer with the Academy of the Fine Arts and I succeeded!"

The other prize winner, Yann Arthus-Bertrand, became, thanks to his aerial photographs, one of the most popular photographers in the world. His worldwide best-seller, "The Earth Seen from Above," sold nearly 3 million copies.

This is a certain vision of photography as "beautiful image" along with nudes and scenes with sharp colors. One is far from reportage or from contemporary art. A disappointed Raymond Depardon, whom rumors had long picked as a favorite. said: "I had applied after being encouraged by the permanent secretary, Arnaud d' Hauterives, not for propriety's sake! I thought that I could defend the documentary photograph and help young photographers financially. But the academicians remained stuck in the Middel Ages!²

Before meeting every Wednesday with their peers, the two new academicians will have to get through the installation ceremony, planned several months from now. "Afterwards," says Lucien Clergue, "there is much to do!" In addition to the purses and the prizes--the Academy of the Fine Arts each year distributes more than 700.000 euros to encourage creation--he already has the idea of initiating, for the Academy, a collection of contemporary photography.

PRESS RELEASE:
ANNOUNCING FIBAPRINT GLOSS F-TYPE 300G/M

4/9/06 - (3/1/06) Innova Art Ltd, Epping, United Kingdom announces the release of its new FibePrint Gloss F-type at PMA 2006 in Orlando. Innova is a UK based producer of fine papers for digital art and photo output.

The Gloss F-type is styled after the traditional Bariet papers that are used for fine museum and gallery editions. The Innova F-type papers produce realistic air dried F-type prints from your inkjet printer. No longer will photographers have to maintain a wet lab to create archive quality black and white prints. Danny Chau of Chau Digital Photography stated, "This material has produced black and white prints on my Epson 4800 that are absolutely phenomenal. This is the first paper where I can match the quality of prints created in my darkroom with inkjet printing."

Since a number of traditional photo paper manufacturers will soon stop making black-and-white photographic paper, the Innova-F-type Gloss will allow creative photographers to move into digital and still provide the quality their customers expect.

F-type Gloss is designed for use with pigmented ink printing systems and provides excellent d-max and color gamut. As with the entire Innova range, the printed output provide an exceptional degree of scuff resistance; thus reducing post printing damage. The base material is alpha cellulose and manufactured to archive quality specifications.

FibaPrint Gloss (F-Type) is available in sheets and rolls starting in mid March 2006 as follows:
25 & 50 sheets/package: 8.5x11"; 11x17"; 13x19" 17x22" (36x48" in April) A4; A3; A3+; A2
Rolls: 17"; 24" 36"; 44" (all rolls 15 meters long, 3" cores)

All sheets from 8.5x11" through 17x22" feature the Innova clear case packaging that provides bullet protection from shipping and storage damage. The clear case doubles as a storage for finished prints.

PRESS RELEASE:
BIG IS BEAUTIFUL

World's first 12 ink, 60" large format printer delivers best image quality at high speed

4/8/06 - (4/3/06) Canon Europe, world leader in digital imaging technology, has today launched its first 60" large format printer, the imagePROGRAF iPF9000. Aimed primarily at the print-for-pay sector, including copy shops and professional print businesses, this new flagship device delivers best-in-class image quality at high speed, and incorporates a range of industry-leading technologies, including Canon's new 12-colour pigment ink system.

The imagePROGRAF iPF9000 is a major addition to Canon's portfolio of large format printers, which now runs from 17" all the way up to 60". Additionally, a 12-colour pigment ink system not only improves print quality but also media compatibility and colour range. This means that the imagePROGRAF iPF9000 now offers the widest colour gamut in its class, and provides accurate colour reproduction on a variety of media--yet another example of Canon's commitment to the large format printer market.

Utilising new, unique technology that induces productivity and accurate, high-quality output, the imagePROGRAF iPF9000 combines an industry-first, high-density twin print head utilising FINE (Full Photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) technology. Furthermore, a new high-speed controller, coupled with functions that automatically detect corresponding media and ink, results in increased output speed that does not compromise quality.

A key feature of the imagePROGRAF iPF9000 is the twin, high-density print head. It not only enhances printing speed, but also the durability of the device as it crams over 30,000 nozzles into two 1" print heads. Moreover, by incorporating FINE technology, 4-pl (picolitre) ink droplets ensure delicate colour gradation, high-definition expression and accuracy. The broad colour gamut is realised with the addition of red, green and blue inks, as well as two varieties of grey--photo grey and grey--that enables smooth colour gradation whilst realising a neutral and constant monochrome. In addition, the use of two types of black ink--photo black and matte black--guarantees extended media compatibility.

"The launch of the imagePROGRAF iPF9000 proves our commitment to the market. Canon has grown 45% year on year within the LFP space and has used new products to fuel our evolution. With a target market share of 20%, to achieve by the end of 2006, the new large format portfolio that the imagePROGRAF iPF9000 heads-up is exceptionally significant. These printers unite market-leading technology and speed to produce best-in-class output and combined with Canon's European strategy to provide customers with a real purchase option it really does have to be seen to be believed," commented Paul Hinkins, LFP European Product Marketing Manager, Canon Europe.

The imagePROGRAF iPF9000 comes with Canon's PosterArtist and Digital Photo Print Professional as standard, as well as print plug-ins for Adobe Photoshop and Canon's own Digital Photo Professional software, which is supplied with its EOS range of cameras. It can be configured to an existing network and has been designed to ensure ease-of-use and effective print management.

The imagePROGRAF iPF9000 will be available throughout Europe from June, 2006.
