ARTISTRY RETREAT PRESENTS LAURENCE GARTEL

9/30/05 - (9/29/05) Karen Sperling is pleased to present a one-day workshop with pioneer digital artist Laurence Gartel as part of her November 2005 Artistry Corel Painter Retreat.

Laurence Gartel has been creating art with digital tools since before there was a Painter and a Photoshop. And he has had successes internationally with his art, as reflected by his list of accomplishments: http://gartelmuseum.com/resume.html/.

Karen Sperling, who has been writing about and teaching Corel Painter longer than anyone, is happy to offer this rare opportunity to meet artist and entrepreneur Laurence Gartel in this one-day seminar, where attendees will learn both how Gartel uses Painter and Photoshop and how he has become one of the most important and successful artists of our time.

Participants will learn how photographer and artist Gartel finds his inspiration, creates his art and gets showcased in just about every medium and venue, from galleries to museums to public works to video to books to television.

Laurence Gartel will present a thorough overview of his 30-year career as a successful artist, entrepreneur and businessman, including examples of his work and how he employs the tools of Painter and Photoshop to make them completely signature to his style. He will also discuss market strategies directly pertaining to each student's area of expertise.

This is a unique chance for attendees to gain insight into Laurence Gartel's art and success, and to be inspired in their own photographic and artistic pursuits.

Participants can either just attend the one-day workshop on Monday, November 14, 2005, or they can then go on to learn how to paint portraits and landscapes in Corel Painter from Karen Sperling in the Artistry Corel Painter Retreat, taking place on the three days following the workshop with Laurence Gartel, Tuesday through Thursday, November 15 through 17, 2005.

Karen Sperling, who wrote the first several Painter manuals when the program debuted, in addition to several Painter books, and whose Painter art has been in group shows and is held in private collections around the world, teaches not only the Painter steps, but also the art concepts that attendees need to know to create paintings in Corel Painter, either from scratch, or from photos.

PRESS RELEASE:
CAMERA PHONES BOOSTING DIGITAL CAMERA SALES

9/21/05 - (8/31/05) Contrary to expectations, camera phones are spurring U.S. consumers to buy digital cameras, according to a study released Monday by research firm IDC.

Mobile phones equipped with tiny cameras are seen as less of a threat to replace digital cameras as camera prices fall, IDC said in its Mobile Imaging Survey. In fact the report said new phones help to introduce users to digital photography, which uses no film and allow pictures to be e-mailed.

Sharp growth in sales of cameraphones with powerful lenses was once seen as a threat to digital cameras, since most new mobile phones sold are equipped with tiny camera lenses that lets user spontaneously snap pictures in places they might not have in the past.

The study said that over 30 percent of camera phone owners plan to purchase digital cameras because they learned about digital photography through camera phones, IDC said.

Analyst Chris Chute said that U.S. consumers still look to regular cameras for capturing important family or vacation snapshots.

"We are a pretty traditional culture here and we identify with traditional form factors like camera, and we still use phones (primarily) for making calls," Chute said.

The use of phones to take pictures continues to grow, but is still dwarfed by the use of digital cameras. Some 4 billion pictures were snapped with phones in the U.S. in 2004, and about 7.5 billion will be shot this year. Digital camera snapshots should rise to 40 billion this year from 28 billion last year, IDC said.

IDC added that the printing of images captured on camera phones has slowed. Instead of one image being printed per user on average per month, as in 2004, one image is being printed every three months in 2005.

PRESS RELEASE:
OLYMPUS P-11 DIGITAL PHOTO PRINTER PRODUCES PHOTO-LAB QUALITY PRINTS AT REMARKABLE SPEED

Fastest Consumer Snapshot Dye-Sub Printer Delivers Professional Results In As Little As 30 Seconds

9/7/05 - (8/29/05) The new Olympus P-11 gives consumers everything they could want from a premium home photo printer including fast photo-lab quality prints, ease-of-use, portability and affordability. Unlike ink jet prints that play connect-the-dots to form images, dye-sublimation technology diffuses ink right into the photo paper, so there's no smudging or blotting. The P-11's edge-to-edge prints emerge dry to the touch and without perforated tabs. Moreover, the P-11 gives you the option to print pictures without a computer. Just connect any PictBridge compatible digital camera directly to the printer and enjoy rich, continuous-tone prints in 33 seconds or less.

"Dye-sublimation is the gold standard for photographic printing. When printing at home, the P-11 is as close to professional laboratory processing as you can get--minus the waiting, of course," said Michael Barnett, Product Manager, Olympus Imaging America. "The P-11 produces sharp, color-accurate prints in about 30 seconds--half the time of other dye-sub printers. And unlike other printers, there are no microcut or perforated tabs to tear off, so your pictures come out ready to share."

Fast, Convenient Edge-to-Edge Prints
Olympus designed the P-11 Digital Photo Printer for high-quality prints at the fastest speed possible.  The P-11 prints vivid 4" x 6" (approx.) or 3.5" x 5" lab-quality, edge-to-edge photographs in 33 seconds or less--making it the fastest dye-sublimation printer of its kind on the market today. And since the P-11 prints edge-to-edge, there are no microcuts or perforations, so your prints look like they were processed professionally.

Beautiful Continuous-Tone Dye-Sub Printing
In contrast to ink jet printers that use individual dots to create colors, Olympus precision dye-sublimation vaporizes dye that saturates the photo paper resulting in smooth, realistic, continuous-tone images--just like film prints. Because the dye infuses the paper, your pictures are also less vulnerable to scratches, fading and distortion. Prints emerge from the P-11 dry, durable, and in archival condition. Pictures are protected from UV light, fingerprints, even water--thanks to a special over-coating.

PictBridge Compatibility Makes Printing Easy
To make the printing process a snap, Olympus has incorporated PictBridge technology into the P-11 Digital Photo Printer so users can connect it to any PictBridge-enabled digital camera and print directly--no computer necessary. Of course, users also have the option of printing from a PC or Mac.

Space-Saving Design
The P-11 has a sleek, compact design ideal for the corner of a desk, bookshelf, or anywhere in the home. Unlike other dye-sub printers, the P-11's paper tray does not protrude from the front of the printer. Not only does this design allow for a smaller operating footprint (approx. 7"x7"), but prints are also protected from dust and debris during the printing process.

Availability
The P-11 Digital Photo Printer will be available in October 2005. The P-11 comes supplied with an AC Adapter, Paper Tray, 3.5x5 Conversion Tray, Starter Kit (Ink Ribbon Cartridge & 4x6 Paper), CD-ROM (Printer Driver), Instruction Manual, and Warranty Card.

U.S. Pricing: P-11 Digital Photo Printer Estimated Street Price: $149.99

PRESS RELEASE:
HASSELBLAD LAUNCHES THE NEXT GENERATION OF PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Four new products address needs of both general and specialist professional photographers

8/28/05 - (8/24/05) A year from the launch of the new Hasselblad, the company is setting a new benchmark for digital professional photography with the announcement of new flagship digital cameras and camera backs based on a new digital platform, satisfying the needs of both the general and specialist professional photographer.

Building on the success of the H1 range of products, Hasselblad has developed the H2 cross-platform camera and the H2D fully integrated digital camera. Both the cameras include a series of brand new features, and are fully compatible with Hasselblad's existing H system lenses.

New products in the Ixpress digital back line include the Ixpress CF and Ixpress CFH, bringing new levels of flexibility to specialist professional photographers, enabling them to take full advantage of everything that leading-edge digital photography can offer.

All four new Hasselblad products offer photographic professionals the quality of medium-format image capture, combined with the 'point-and-shoot' ease of use, portability and flexibility more often associated with smaller format DSLR technology.

The H2 and H2D cameras deliver improved mobility, quality, and workflow. Brand new camera features include a highly advanced image approval and selection tool, called Instant Approval Architecture (TM + patent pending) providing a swift and easy way to select and classify images.

Additionally, Hasselblad has built into the H2 cross-platform camera a new single-battery operation of the camera with the new Ixpress CFH digital back, offering one on/off switch and one operating system, facilitating streamlined, integrated operation. With existing digital backs already in the market, the H2 delivers the exact functionality of the H1.

Christian Poulsen, CEO of Hasselblad explains: "In the year since Hasselblad and Imacon joined forces, we have been inundated with constructive feedback from professional photographers worldwide, eager to see Hasselblad's legendary quality evolve with developments in digital technology. When we reviewed their wishes, we were able to distil them into five key areas: format, storage, open standards, image approval and selection, and image color refinement. This gave us a clear blueprint for the next phase of our product development."

"The result is a new range of technologically advanced products that will change the working habits of general and specialist professional photographers, providing them with the tools they need to capture magical images, while growing a profitable, customer-focused business."

Format - a new digital camera platform
Today's professional photographers demand higher resolution, less noise, and improved composition, all of which are addressed with Hasselblad's new camera platform. The H2 and H2D use an optical format much larger than 35mm, with a large format, high quality 22 Mpix CCD sensor measuring 37mm x 49mm. Coupled with an ultra bright, extra large 'H-size' viewfinder enabling better image composition, the final result is image quality that exceeds normal expectations of medium format photography.

Storage - three storage modes for ultimate choice and flexibility
Optimum portability and image storage are critical for the professional photographer, but have historically been compromised in the digital medium format environment. Hasselblad's new products now offer the choice of the portable CF card storage, the flexible FireWire drive, or the tethered operation with extended, special capture controls. With these three operating and storage options, the photographer is able to select a mode to suit the nature of the work at hand, whether in the studio or on location.

Open standards - redefining the way professional photographers work
Hasselblad has partnered closely with Adobe to make its new products fully compatible with Adobe's raw image format DNG ('Digital Negative'), bringing this new technology standard to the professional photographer for the first time. The DNG file format enables raw, compressed image files to be opened directly in Adobe Photoshop CS. This allows photographers to operate quickly and efficiently, reducing the "downtime" taken to process image data and enabling final images to reach the customer more quickly. Hasselblad image files now carry a full set of metadata, including capture conditions, keywords and copyright, facilitating work with image asset management solutions. For specialist commercial photographers the full productivity and creative freedom offered by Hasselblad's FlexColor workflow software is also available via importing the DNG file. The new FlexColor now allows the photographer to manipulate color temperature and compare image details across multiple images for precise image selection.

Image approval and selection - ultimate creative control
Limitless digital image capture loses some of its potential if the photographer cannot quickly review and select the best images to present to the client. Building on the success of its Audio Exposure Feedback technology, Hasselblad has created Instant Approval Architecture (IAA), an enhanced set of feedback tools, designed to liberate the photographer to focus on the shoot rather than the selection process. IAA triggers audible and visible signals for each image captured, telling the photographer immediately whether the image has a red, amber or green light status. The information is recorded both in the file and in the file name, providing a quick and easy way to classify and select images, in the field or in the lab. In addition, a larger, enhanced OLED display in the new Hasselblad products provides a realistic, high quality and perfect contrast image view, even in bright sunlight, to allow instant on-site image approval.

Color refinement - new color handling concept
Color management solutions have in the past imposed limitations on professional photographers, particularly when capturing various skin tones, metals, fabrics, flowers etc. To combat this, Hasselblad has developed a new, powerful color engine in its FlexColor workflow software. With a one-camera set-up, the new optimized color engine produces reliable out-of-the-box color with smooth gradations, with skin tones and other difficult colors reproduced effectively.

Christian Poulsen concludes: "Less than nine months since the launch of the integrated H System digital product line, Hasselblad is meeting professional photographers' changing demands with a revolutionary set of fully-featured cross-platform and integrated digital products. Hasselblad has always set new standards in analogue photography, and by doubling our R&D resource, we are fully committed to being at the leading edge where professional digital photography is concerned. With these new products, we are underlining our mission to work hand in hand with loyal Hasselblad users and new customers to help them take full advantage of the potential that digital technology holds for them, creatively and commercially."

The new Hasselblad products will be rolled out worldwide through Hasselblad's national subsidiaries and channel partners in Q3 of 2005.

An extensive upgrade program is available to pave a route for existing Hasselblad customers to enter the new product generation.

PRESS RELEASE:
CANON LAUNCHES 13 DESIGNER PIXMA PHOTO LAB PRINTERS

8/22/05 - (8/22/05) Canon, a leader in photographic and imaging technology, today announces the release of 13 designer PIXMA photo printer models, including 5 multifunctionals. The launch meets a rapidly accelerating photo printer market, which has grown by over 123% in 2004.

The next generation PIXMA printers are up to 58% faster than previous models, in some cases producing borderless photolab quality prints 10x15cm in approx 36 seconds. "People are placing increasing importance on speed and print quality," said Mogens Jensen, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging, Europe. "That we can increase both simultaneously is the key competitive advantage of Canon's FINE technology".

"With this new PIXMA range Canon will focus on communicating photo print speeds rather than traditional document page per minute (ppm) figures. With the increasing demand for photo printers consumers expect a more transparent indicator of how fast they can print a photo," said Jensen.

In a move that illustrates Canon's commitment to photo printing, the imaging giant recently announced a $100 million (US) investment in a new ink jet manufacturing facility in Vietnam. "With this new PIXMA range, our objective is to take number 1 position in Europe in home photo printing," noted Jensen.

Patented by Canon, FINE is a semi-conductor manufacturing technique that produces super-charged print heads with as many as 6144 microscopic nozzles.

Introduced in July 2004, the PIXMA brand combined elegant styling with FINE's super-fast photolab quality printing. "This comprehensive overhaul and expansion of the PIXMA product range just one year after its introduction is the clearest sign yet of our commitment to photo printing," said Jensen.

The introduction of Canon's new ChromaLife100 system across the range also improves fade resistance. ChromaLife100 produces prints that resist fading for 100 years when stored in an album. Prints exposed unframed to the air resist fading for 10 years if printed on Photo Paper Pro (PR-101).

Intended to cover every market segment and consumer preference, the range includes:
* 5 x multifunctional "photo centres" with up to 9600x2400 dpi 1 picolitre photo printing, from entry level MP150 through to premium model MP800 all featuring excellent connectivity and stand-alone photo functionality
* 3 x photo direct printers: 6-ink, excellent connectivity, up to 9600 4x2400dpi and 1 picolitre 5
* 3 x premium photo printers: 9600 4x2400dpi, 1 picolitre 5, 5-ink, PictBridge compatible and wireless connectivity (iP5200R)
* 2 x slim-line, 4800x1200dpi, 2 picolitre 5 entry level photo printers

FINE technology also ensures that all PIXMA printers also have exceptional document print speeds and quality.

Photo capability
Together with the significant speed improvements and excellent quality levels derived from FINE technology, photo printing functionality and versatility is a key capability across the range. Extensive connectivity options such as PictBridge, IrDA, memory card slots and optional Bluetooth(R) provide direct connection for digital cameras, digital video cameras and mobile phone. All products feature:
* Faster, borderless A4 photo printing,
* Maximum printing resolutions of 4800 6 dpi or better with 2 or 1 picolitre droplets 5,
* Extensive software that works seamlessly with the printers to maximise output quality and ensure ease of use.

Advanced media handling
Consistent with the PIXMA line introduced last year, most products in the range feature 'advanced media handling'--a term used by Canon to describe the extensive media processing options available. For many models, these include:
* Capacity to print to special DVD/CD media
* Both 'J' pass and 'U' turn paper paths, allowing storage and operation on a shelf or other areas where space is at a premium
* Auto duplex printing

PRESS RELEASE:
PIEZOGRAPHY NEUTRAL K7 INKS RELEASED

8/10/05 - (8/9/05) Piezography Neutral K7 has been released for the EPSON(R) Stylus(R) Pro 4000, 7600 and 9600 and the Epson Stylus Photo 2200! This is the most exciting moment we have had since winning the DIMA award for best black-and-white with the PiezographyBW ICC system in 2004. This year we did not enter DIMA, nor even attend PMA. Rather we have been working on an entirely new ink formulation we call Piezography Neutral K7.

New Piezography Neutral K7 Ink Technology
The new Piezography Neutral K7 ink formulation provides a user with unprecedented ease in both start-up and use. This is the first ink product we have engineered that will not require flushing cartridges when switching to and from the OEM inks on a desktop printer! This lowers the cost of entry for new users. This is also the first ink we have designed which is conducive to long resting periods within the printer. Further, this ink was designed for the new EPSON print head technologies. We made it finer in particle size. We put it in a suspension we call "slippery" so that it works through the smaller micro-channels of EPSON print heads. And finally, we were able to give it additional longevity protection. All in all this is our best ink to date. We believe that it's as quantum a leap forward as was PiezoTone over its predecessor.

Piezography Neutral K7 is also unique in offering seven distinct dilutions for superior black-and-white output. The new EPSON UltraChrome(TM) K3 ink set only uses three dilutions. The introduction of printers with seven or more channels of ink has given us the opportunity to move from four dilutions of gray to seven. While others have chosen to utilize these extra channels to offer warm/cool "toners", we are using these positions to increase print-quality. All seven of the Piezography Neutral K7 inks are used when making a print, which results in a print of the highest quality.

World's First Neutral Tone
Neutral is interesting as a concept. Neutrality has been pursued in color management for the past two years by several software vendors attempting to neutralize color inkjet inks. While the effect of that is quite good on its own, there has never been a comparison to an ink which is in itself "neutral". The brain is very sensitive to neutral. In fact, it is easier for humans to see off-color on a neutral axis than it is for humans to detect when color is off in a color image. In neutral, slight shifts is all that is necessary for humans to detect warm, cool, red, green, etc... By comparison, color images can shift quite a distance before the average human detects the need for color correction. Making a neutral ink was challenging for certain, but it was not without reason. Neutrality allows the color of the supporting paper to fully influence the final image. While we designed the Neutral K7 inks to be neutral on some of the most highly regarded inkjet papers, namely that of Bradford Rag Bright White, Hahnemuehle Photo Rag, Innova Photo Smooth Cotton, it can easily simulate a warmer or cooler tone simply by shifting the paper. The look is more photographic than ever!

Pricing and Availability
EPSON Stylus Pro 4000, 7600 and 9600
Piezography Neutral K7 inks will currently work with Roy Harrington's QuadTone RIP. ErgoSoft's StudioPrint RIP does intend on supporting all seven dilutions of the Neutral K7 inks in their Version 12 release that is anticipated at the end of the summer. QuadTone RIP provides independent control of all ink channels, which enables the photographer to use the Neutral K7 inks to their full potential, and best of all it is both Mac and PC compatible! QuadTone RIP comes packaged with a Curve Creation Tool which enables you to create your own curves using a densitometer.

The set of seven (220 ml) Piezography Neutral K7 inks for the EPSON Stylus Pro 4000, 7600 or 9600 will cost $525. For those of you that need a densitometer, we recommend purchasing Gretag's Eye-One Design, which features the Eye-One spectrophotometer for only $895! QuadTone RIP is a shareware program that can be downloaded for a $50 shareware fee. For $1470 you can be up and running with the most talked about inkset on the market!

For StudioPrint users we have positioned the inks so that you can replace either your Warm Neutral/Carbon Sepia three ink dilution set, or your Cool Neutral/Selenium Tone three ink dilution set with three dilutions of Piezography Neutral K7. You will find these ink sets conveniently explained on the StudioPrint/PiezoTone ink ordering pages for the EPSON 4000, 7600, and 9600 printers. In September, we are expecting the release of Version 12 which will allow all seven dilutions to be used to create a single linearization. PRESS RELEASE:
ARTISTRY TIPS AND TRICKS TAKES NEW DIRECTION

8/10/05 - (8/4/05) Artistry Tips and Tricks, containing step-by-step tutorials and images for using Corel Painter, takes a new direction with the August 2005 issue and covers both the art concepts and the Corel Painter tools for turning photos into paintings.

The August issue covers painting in the style of Rembrandt. Future issues will take a look at the art concepts and Painter tools for emulating other great artists including the Impressionists.

"Most photographers missed studying the art concepts taught in art classes," says Karen Sperling. "I find that one of the best ways to catch up on the art theory is to look at the works of a great artist like Rembrandt, analyze what went into his paintings, then go through the Painter tools and brushes that you can use to get similar results."

Adds Sperling, "I don't pretend to be Rembrandt. Nor is painting in another artist's style copying that artist. Throughout time, artists have studied the techniques of their predecessors in their quest to find their own style and voice. In any big museum you1ll see students sketching the works of the great masters. The idea is not to copy them, but to learn from them."

In the August issue of Artistry Tips and Tricks are specific instructions to paint details like faces, hair and lighting in Corel Painter in the style of Rembrandt. Future issues of Artistry Tips and Tricks will also analyze the great artists and how to apply their techniques in Corel Painter.

"Inevitably, whenever you set out to paint in the style of someone else, you will find your own form of expression in the process," Sperling says.

The topics in the August 2005 issue of Artistry Tips and Tricks for painting in the style of Rembrandt include:
* How to Choose Colors and How to Correct Colors in Painter, using Layers, Gradients, Effects and Brushes
* How to Paint Faces and Hair
* How to Paint Lace and Fabric
* How to Adjust Lighting and Add Textures using Layers, Effects and Brushes.

The steps show turning photos into paintings, however, all the techniques may be used when painting from scratch in Painter as well.

All the interim images are provided in addition to detailed step-by-step instructions.

The original Painter expert, Karen Sperling wrote the first several Painter manuals starting when the program debuted in 1991, in addition to the Painter Complete series of books. Sperling has taught Painter since its debut to everyone from freelance artists and photographers to staff artists and designers at major motion picture and greeting card companies. She has also given seminars and demos of Painter at American Film Institute, Macworld, Seybold, the Professional Photographers of America and SIGGRAPH. Her Painter art has been included in group shows and she is a member of the San Diego Digital Art Guild.

PRESS RELEASE:
BREATHING COLOR ANNOUNCES BRILLANCE CHROMATA BRIGHT WHITE OBA-FREE CANVAS

8/4/05 - (8/1/05) Breathing Color Inc. is proud to announce the release of the Brillance Chromata White line of fine art canvas. The Brillance Chromata White is a premium-grade fine art canvas specially designed for high-end giclee reproductions that require exceptional color gamut and archivability. The Chromata canvas is a bright white 20.5 mil canvas poly-cotton blend that is exceptionally stable for longevity since it is acid-free, and pH-neutral without optical brightening additives (OBAs) or fluorescent whiteners.

By eliminating these unstable whitening agents that deteriorate and yellow over time, Breathing Color expects the Brillance Chromata White to be one of the most archival canvas products on the market. Despite the absence of these whitening agents it is still exceptionally white, and it also has a water-resistant surface and works well with both solvent and water-based top coats such as Breathing Color's Glamour II.

The Chromata technology creates a highly stable white base with unsurpassed discoloration resistance to ultraviolet light. Color shifting is reduced by stabilizing the whiteness of the base with a special anti-oxidation technology that further protects printed images. Metamerism is also reduced by quenching the ultraviolet excitation wavelengths resulting in a more stable illumination of an image under different spectral power distributions. Nick Friend, Breathing Color's president, summarized the results of this science by saying, "The Brillance Chromata White prints beautifully and will stay beautiful; it produces the long-term results our customers demand."

The Brillance Chromata White canvas is the first of several new upcoming products that will incorporate the Chromata technology. The use of this technology further delivers on Breathing Color's promise to its customers to deliver cutting-edge products. This canvas is designed for pigment inks such as the Epson UltraChrome, and the new K3 inks, but will also work well with dye-based inks.

PRESS RELEASE:
INNOVATIVE FRAME COMPANY FILLS VOID IN PHOTOGRAPHY WITH ELEGANT FRAMES IN NON-STANDARD SIZES

8/1/05 - (7/29/05) When amateur photographer Mark Rogers started researching frames for his own digital prints, he discovered frame companies simply did not offer the non-standard sized frames needed to fit the unique shape of digital prints. For example, he found many 13x19 prints available but not one single company sold 13x19 frames. Another very common paper size used in digital photography, 8.5x11, was available only in certificate frames and not in fine-art frames. These and other challenges inspired Mark Rogers to found Frame Destination, Inc. (http://www.framedestination.com).

Rogers states, "I was really frustrated with the lack of frame sizes for 13x19 and other print sizes from the usual suppliers. I also found it hard to find standard-size frames that help reduce fading and not cause yellowing." Armed with the research and know-how to produce new types of advanced frames, Rogers opened Frame Destination, Inc. in April of 2004. Starting out in a modest brick-and-mortar warehouse location, the Web site, http://www.framedestination.com, was launched to meet the ever growing need for museum and archival quality frames in non-standard sizes. Frame Destination, Inc., primarily a Web-based company, has already grown out of its first home and moved into a new building where customers can shop in the convenient showroom.

Frame Destination, Inc. currently markets acid-free, conservation quality frames in wood or metal, complete with Cyro acrylic glazing and Artcare-treated Bainbridge mat/mount components. Rogers designs and produces these special frames to serve both amateur and professional photographers for both digital and film photography.

Frame Destination, Inc. is the first frame company to focus on the new and unique needs of the digital photographer. Unlike other companies selling frames, Frame Destination, Inc. is the first to specialize in frames--and specifically non-standard-size, fine art frames--for photographers. Frame Destination, Inc. solves the problem of photo industry frame sizes (8x10, 11x14, 16x20) that do not match printing industry paper sizes (8.5x11, 11x17, 13x19, 17x22).

"Frame Destination, Inc. has definitely filled a hole in a market where photographers were frequently faced with the problem of photo frames sizes not matching common printing paper sizes," says Harald Johnson, author of the best-selling book, Mastering Digital Printing, Second Edition. "Mark has developed a whole line of framing products for fine-art photography that are simply the best. I use them myself!"

Frames Destination, Inc. sells simple and elegant ready-made and custom frames as well as frame accessories such as mats and mounting board, picture mounting hinging tissue, photo corners, and clear bags for displaying mounted prints for resale. For ordering and information, log onto http://www.framedestination.com; email: info@framedestination.com or call toll-free 1-877-5FRAMES.

The award-winning Digital ICE technology automatically removes surface defects, such as dust, scratches and even mold, from a scanned image of negatives, positives or slides with minimal effort. Digital ICE technology differentiates itself from software-only solutions because it is built into, and works from within the scanner during the scanning process. As a result, it does not soften, blur or otherwise alter any underlying details or composition of the original image. This powerful technology saves customers time and increases their productivity by eliminating the need to manually remove or re-touch defects in the image.

More about Epson Easy Photo Fix Technology
Faded color photos can be easily and affordably restored with the Epson Easy Photo Fix software included with the new Epson Perfection 4490 Photo, Perfection 3590 Photo and Perfection 3490 Photo scanners. Customers simply scan an image and click on a check box for instant color restoration or dust removal. Epson Easy Photo Fix makes this process effortless because it is incorporated into the Epson Scan driver.

The Epson Scan driver has three different user modes: Full Auto mode, which automatically scans at pre-determined settings for entry-level users; Home mode, which offers some pre-set recommended settings for the advanced amateur; and Professional mode, which allows access to all scan settings, giving the advanced user maximum control.

PRESS RELEASE:
DISCOVER HOW DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY IS ENHANCING ART

New Book Combines a How-To Guide with Practical Discussion and Rich Imagery

7/27/05 - (7/27/05) Thomson Course Technology, the worldwide leader in computer education products and services and part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC), today announces the release of Going Digital: The Practice and Vision of Digital Artists. Going Digital examines the process of digital art creation--the history behind its evolution as well as the visionary work of artists themselves. Seventeen artists were asked to take three, simple seed photographs and use them creatively to make their own works of digital art. The book both showcases the artwork created by these cutting-edge artists as well as examines the creative process.

The evolution of the digital art medium offers artists a revolutionary set of tools with which to express their work. Regardless of the approach you take toward art, the discussion and use of these new tools and the fresh vision of the artists featured provide clear insight into the rapidly developing field of digital art.

Robert Bersson, author of Responding to Art, writes: "Joe Nalven and JD Jarvis' intriguing book furthers our understanding and appreciation of this youngest art form. It starts with the unusual condition of artists working from the same images, thereby requiring us to attend closely to their artistic process and personal vision. Seeing their digital art unfold and then critically responding to it requires some fresh thinking for those unfamiliar with the divergent ways of making digital art, but it is a journey well worth taking."

Part of Thomson Course Technology PTR's "Digital Process and Print Series," Going Digital features detailed journals documenting the artists' work methods as well as general observations about the commonalities and categories of art made digitally. The book is richly supplemented with examples of digital artworks from around the world and includes an extensive glossary of terms and concepts used in digital art and printmaking. It also offers the opportunity for a rare look at the challenges and opportunities afforded artists by "going digital."

Artists and those who appreciate art will find:
* A how-to guide that presents an accessible and practical discussion of the ways that digital technology and techniques have changed the manner in which artists make, distribute, and market their work.

* Rich images and instructional text that guide the reader through each step leading up to the finished piece.

* Thought-provoking concepts that will help curators categorize and formulate guidelines for placing digital art within exhibitions and art contests.

* Useful insights into why digital art is an important component in the art of a new century.

Available now in bookstores everywhere: Going Digital: The Practice and Vision of Digital Artists, ISBN: 1-59200-918-2, 411 pages, US $39.99/CAN $53.95, www.courseptr.com

PRESS RELEASE:
KODAK INTRODUCES 1200I INKJET PRINTER

Announces that Encad brand will be replaced.

7/19/05 - (7/1/05) Kodak has introduced its new wide-format printing system, the Kodak 1200i. The system comprises the new 1200i inkjet printer, a customized RIP for point-of-sale and signage applications, Kodak Quantum inks, Kodak wide-format media, and the company's technical support.

Based on the Encad NovaJet 1000i technology, the 1200i is a 6-color (CMYKcm) thermal inkjet printer available in 42- and 60-in. widths. It employs the Kodak-branded Quantum dye and pigment-based inks, which have the same formulation as the former Encad Quantum inks. These inks are backward-compatible with the Encad NovaJet 1000i; Kodak and Encad ink brands can be mixed in the same printer.

The 60-in. 1200i can hit a maximum speed of 220 sq ft/hr at 600 dpi; in high-quality ("ultrafine") mode, it produces 30 sq ft/hr at 1200 dpi. These numbers are similar to the 1000i.

The printer offers a number of improvements in the internal systems versus the 1000i, primarily with the print-cartridge design and Active Service Station (which automatically fills, primes, and cleans the ink cartridges), reports Kodak.

Price: $11,995 (42-in.), $16,995 (60-in.); price includes 1 year of warranty service.

This is the first printer since Kodak's purchase of Encad that will not feature the Encad badge. And, says Encad's Anna Rosemore, expect to less and less of the Encad badge in the near future: "The Encad and NovaJet brands will live on in all our legacy products, but will be replaced by the Kodak brand from the present into the future. While Encad and NovaJet have been successful longstanding brands, the Kodak brand will be utilized for all products, services and organizations within the new Graphics Communications Group, emphasizing Kodak's commitment to the digital future of commercial printing."

PRESS RELEASE:
HP IGNITES PRINTER INDUSTRY WITH MARKET-CHANGING TECHNOLOGY

New ink-based printing platform delivers record-breaking print speeds in the home and office, and will scale to high-volume printing markets.

7/18/05 - (7/11/05) HP today announced a breakthrough ink-based printing platform, the result of a five-year, $1.4 billion strategic investment that the company believes will catapult its leadership in the printer market years ahead of its competitors.

At a press conference here, HP unveiled its first products built on the new scalable printing technology, which is designed specifically to deliver high-performance printing for high-volume users. These include the world's fastest home photo printing devices - 4 x 6-inch photos in as fast as 14 seconds(1) - as well as the world's fastest desktop color business printer, which enables small and medium-size businesses to print up to twice the speed(2) and 30 percent lower cost-per-page than color laser printers.(3)

"Today marks a milestone in HP's 21-year printing history," said Vyomesh Joshi, executive vice president, Imaging and Printing Group, HP. "This technology is the next step in our business transformation - the master key that unlocks new market opportunities and further growth in our printer business. Today's announcement will create a new perspective and experience around printing in the home, in the office and for the entire industry needing digital prints."

Bringing new levels of choice to customers while meeting their diverse printing needs and budgets, HP additionally announced a range of digital photography products, including the industry's first compact photo printer capable of printing 5 x 7-inch photos and storing up to a year's worth of photos (more than 1,000 images).(4)

Innovation drives growth
HP's new technology is a breakthrough in the architecture and manufacturing of the inkjet printhead. The sophisticated assembly of the new printhead enables a faster development cycle at an estimated 50 percent lower cost, giving HP an efficiency of scale for its substantial research and development investment.

The printhead components are fabricated as one unit via a photolithographic process, rather than welded together in post-production. This results in the precise alignment of the chamber, nozzles and heating element, which then improves the accuracy of ink drop placement. This unique design also supports an increased density of nozzles, with 3,900 nozzles or more on a single printhead. More nozzles and increased dot placement accuracy translates into faster, high-quality prints. Additionally, the new printing system ensures that users will never run out of ink mid-page - eliminating a source of wasted ink and paper.

Because the new platform is scalable, HP is able to address the diverse needs of the printing market, from high-volume consumer users and small to medium-size businesses all the way up to the commercial market. This is made possible in three technical ways.

First, HP can increase the size of the swath - the area the printhead covers with each pass over a page. With larger swathes, the printhead needs to make fewer passes over a page, thus leading to increased speeds. Second, HP can increase the number of nozzles on the printhead to allow for higher quality, larger prints. And third, HP can increase the number of inks per printhead, providing a richer color gamut.

High-volume printers based on the new platform
* The HP Photosmart 8250 Photo Printer, priced at $199,(5) and HP Photosmart 3000 All-in-One series, priced from $299 to $399:(5) These are designed for consumers who want to quickly print batches of photos, unattended, in the convenience of their homes. These world's fastest photo printers feature six individual HP Vivera ink cartridges and produce beautiful photos and crisp text at blazing speeds - 4 x 6-inch photos in as fast as 14 seconds for as little as 24 cents a print.(6) The HP Photosmart 8250 Photo Printer is available this month via hpshopping.com and major retailers. The HP Photosmart 3000 All-in-One series is expected to be available this fall.
* The HP Officejet Pro K550 Color Printer series: These single-function printers are designed to deliver superior color, laser-like quality text and water-resistant prints(7) - all at up to twice the print speed and half the purchase cost of competitive color lasers printers.(2) Expected to be available in the fall, this printer series will also set new standards in total cost of ownership, with substantially lower cost-per-page than laser printers.(3)

New ink and media supports printing system
HP's new printing technology has been designed to work as a system with new HP Vivera inks and media:
* New ink formulations work with HP Advanced Papers: The ink formulas used with two new porous papers are designed to deliver instantly dry, water-resistant photos for the home and smear-resistant pages for the office using HP's patented color lock technology.
* "Auto Sense" technology provides another way to eliminate wasted ink or paper: Paper sensing via barcode-like technology identifies the size, orientation and type of photo paper for accurate, best-quality prints.(8)

More capture and printing choices for consumers
HP introduced six new portable photo printers - creating the industry's broadest line of portable printers - including two industry first capabilities: The HP Photosmart 475 GoGo Photo Printer, priced at $279,(5) is the first compact photo printer capable of printing 5 x 7-inch photos, in addition to 4 x 6-inch and panorama prints. The HP Photosmart 475 is also the first compact photo printer to have PC-like power with the ability to store a year's worth of photos (more than 1,000 images).(4)

Another highlight is the HP Photosmart 420 series GoGo Photo Studio, which includes a camera and a printer with a dock. This gives consumers a complete portable photo system and the ability to print photos in three steps - snap, dock, print. Pricing begins at $299.(5)

HP has also extended its portfolio of printing systems to offer its most affordable supplies and printer combination ever. Designed for lower usage applications and optimized for ease-of-use and budget-conscious customers, these systems provide a new entry point of $14.99 and $17.99 for HP 21 (black) and 22 (color) cartridges,(9) respectively, matched with printers starting at $49.99.(5)

Adding to its award-winning line of digital cameras, HP introduced the HP Photosmart R818, R817 and M517 digital cameras, which range in price from $149 to $399.(5) The HP Photosmart R818 and R817 digital cameras feature new HP Real Life Technologies so consumers can not only preview panorama photos, but can now stitch them together inside the camera, allowing for easy printing of panorama photos without a computer.

HP also announced an alliance with Walgreens, extending HP's recently acquired Snapfish online photo services into the retail arena. Millions of Walgreens customers can now enjoy Snapfish's easy-to-use tools for online photo ordering, sharing and storage via http://www.walgreens.com/photo.

Walgreens also is rolling out on a market-by-market basis the ability for customers to upload photos to the site and pick up prints at the Walgreens store of their choice in as little as one hour. The service will be available by September in all markets where Walgreens operates. Customers can also opt for mail delivery of prints made from their uploaded photos.
