12/13/03 - (11/17/03) Added customer conveniences of standalone faxing and automatic document-feeding capabilities highlight the newest product in Dell's line of all-in-one printers, the company announced today.
Priced at $179 after a $20 instant rebate ($199 pre-rebate price), the new Dell Personal All-In-One Printer A960 also makes easy work of printing in color, photocopying and scanning, said Tim Peters, vice president and general manager of Dell Imaging & Printing.
"The Dell A960 is the perfect machine for small businesses and home offices, where professional quality imaging products are needed," said Peters. "It will do everything needed to help run a business or to work from home without breaking the budget."
The A960 is based on the Dell Personal All-in-One Printer A940, winner of the PC Magazine Editors' Choice Award.1 It maintains the print and scan quality of the A940, but also includes advanced features such as an automatic document feeder that lets customers fax, copy or scan up to 50 pages at a time, leaving them free to do more important tasks. Imaging and printing is further complemented with Dell Premium Photo Paper, which users can use to create high-resolution color prints in either 4x6 inch or 8.5x11 inch sizes.
In order to simplify the ink replenishment process, the A960 features the Dell Ink Management SystemTM , which monitors ink levels and proactively prompts users to order replacement cartridges. Once ordered, the cartridges are conveniently shipped directly to the customer, eliminating the time, cost and hassle of traveling to a local retailer.
The Dell Personal All-In-One Printer A960 is now available in North America and will be offered in other regions in the coming months.

PRESS RELEASE:
PANTONE LAUNCHES COLORVANTAGE SYSTEM FOR INKJET PRINTERS.
New Inks and Papers Deliver Unparalleled Color Reproduction, Quality and Fidelity; Brings Professional Color Capabilities to Consumers.
11/29/03 - (11/24/03) Pantone, Inc., the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries for 40 years, today announced that it is expanding its business by entering the inkjet market with a series of products that address the unserved need for professional-quality reproduction in inkjet printing systems. This is the first step in Pantone's strategy to take its professional color brand and expertise directly to the people. Pantone, a pioneer in digital color for 20 years, is the first company to deliver a closed-loop system of products that work in concert for superior color output without the high cost and complex solutions associated with general-purpose OEM products.
PANTONE ColorVantage(TM) is a family of premium inkjet products that includes inks, papers and specially developed profiles. The products are designed for applications where the most accurate color reproduction and the widest possible range of color are required.
With new application areas opening for inkjet technology, sales of both narrow- and wide-format inkjet hardware, media and inks are expected to see continued growth, climbing from $28.5 billion in 2001 to $40.9 billion by 2006, according to a report issued by IT Strategies in January 2003.
"We've been involved in digital printing for the past 20 years and have a deep understanding of the growing needs of this market," said Richard Herbert, president of Pantone, Inc. "There is a burgeoning demand for low cost inkjet printers for reproducing digital photographs, signage, quality graphics and fine art. With PANTONE ColorVantage, we're continuing our 40-year leadership in color science and color fidelity by offering a set of products that work together to deliver unparalleled color reproduction. We plan to prove our product in the professional and prosumer markets, before offering ColorVantage for the higher volume, photo printer market."
"We continue to see solid growth in the inkjet market as end users -- from corporations to consumers -- recognize the all around value of inkjet printers as both low-cost and high print quality devices. For color-critical output, such as photos, pigmented inks offer better durability than dye-based inks," explained Larry Jamieson, director of Lyra Research's Hard Copy Industry Advisory Service. "Pantone is a well-known brand in color, its entry into the market should further the acceptance of pigment inks in home and office environments."
PANTONE ColorVantage Inks
PANTONE ColorVantage inks have a much larger color gamut than those of OEM inks, resulting in richer, deeper, more saturated hues that provide vibrant, true-to-life color reproduction. Using specially pigmented formulations, ColorVantage inks are individually created for the unique characteristics of each supported printer model. In addition to providing superior color quality, the inks dry quicker, have increased lightfastness, and are less prone to color shifts over time than OEM wide-format printer inks.
"My artwork has bright and vibrant colors. With standard OEM inkjet inks, I was always disappointed with the levels of saturation and the way the shadow areas seemed to spread out," explained Gail Marie, founder and co-owner of Gail Marie, whose artwork is licensed worldwide for posters, greeting cards, calendars and home and garden decorative furnishings. "The larger color gamut of the PANTONE ColorVantage inks lets me accurately reproduce my art, including purples, yellows and blues, which are often difficult to reproduce cleanly. I was impressed with how well the PANTONE Products performed."
PANTONE ColorVantage Papers
PANTONE ColorVantage papers provide the best white point and most accurate reproduction when used with PANTONE ColorVantage inks. The paper is available in a variety of finishes -- high-gloss photo, semi-matte proofing, matte and fine art -- and has been selected to achieve optimal color output on inkjet printers.
PANTONE ColorVantage Printer Profiles
Included in the PANTONE ColorVantage Starter Kit are Pantone-developed custom printer profiles that are optimized for use with the ColorVantage inks and papers to improve color reliability and provide the largest color gamut possible. Printer profile updates will be available at www.pantoneinkjet.com.
Pricing and Availability
PANTONE ColorVantage pigmented inks are now available through office superstores including Staples online and mail order catalogs such as the Reliable catalog from Boise Cascade, TigerDirect and PC and Mac Mall. The current set of ColorVantage inks are compatible with EPSON(R) wide-format color printer models 1270, 1280, 5000, 5500, 7000, 7500, 9000 and 9500, as well as EPSON(R)-compatible printers from Mimaki, Mutoh and Roland. Support for additional printers will be added over time.
ColorVantage inks and papers are priced 10 to 15 percent below OEM products. Suggested retail prices for PANTONE ColorVantage Starter Kits, which include all the ink cartridges, a CD with profiles and an easy-to-print PANTONE Color Chart, range from $48 to $605, depending on printer model, with individual replacement cartridges from $21 to $100.

HP MAKES INKJET PRINT CARTRIDGE RECYCLING EASIER.
Free postage-paid envelopes provide consumers and businesses with convenient recycling for their HP inkjet print cartridges.
11/15/03 - (11/12/03) HP (NYSE:HPQ) is making it easier for customers to recycle HP printing supplies with an expanded HP Planet Partners return and recycling program for HP inkjet print cartridges. Starting in December, HP customers in the United States will find postage-paid recycling envelopes in their new HP 56 and 57 inkjet print cartridge boxes. This trial service builds upon HP's environmental leadership in the return and recycling of printing supplies.
With this expanded service, business customers and consumers can help protect the environment by mailing their empty HP inkjet cartridges to HP's state-of-the art recycling operations. The cartridges are then processed into recycled raw materials for use in new consumer products.
This new ink cartridge recycling service is an integral part of HP's renowned Planet Partners program, which has been recognized for its industry-leading HP LaserJet print cartridge recycling program. Since Planet Partners started in 1991, more than 64 million HP inkjet and LaserJet print cartridges have been recycled.
The service expands on existing returns options, including in-box postage-paid return labels for most HP LaserJet cartridges, an option begun in 1991. Customers can also order online postage-paid shipping materials for bulk and individual returns of HP inkjet and LaserJet cartridges at http://www.hp.com/recycle. HP was the first original equipment manufacturer to offer an inkjet print cartridge return and recycling program in the United States through this online offering.
"Environmental protection is a complex undertaking, but the laws of nature are simple. We will provide leadership on the journey to an environmentally sustainable future, with environmentally sound products and creative recycling systems," said Pradeep Jotwani, senior vice president of supplies, Imaging and Printing Group, HP. "We do this while continuing to deliver what we promise and what customers expect - reliable performance and excellent print quality."
HP's Planet Partners program is available in more than 30 countries in Asia, Europe and North America and is a key part of HP's longstanding environmental commitment and stewardship over the entire product lifecycle of its printing supplies.
Combining environmental stewardship and innovation, HP is now seeking to close the loop on the product lifecycle by qualifying recycled HP inkjet print cartridge plastics for use in HP's own materials.
In a pilot project, HP has developed an HP Scanjet scanner component made from 25 percent recycled inkjet cartridge plastic and 75 percent recycled plastic bottles, while meeting all part and product specifications and requirements. HP will continue to investigate opportunities for using recycled plastics to deliver high-quality, reliable and environmentally sound products.

The Niagara Continuous Ink Flow System is currently produced and available for the chipped models C80, C82, 825, 925, 950/960, 2100/2200, 785EPX, 870, 890, 1270, 1280, 1290, 2000P, 2200, 7600, and 9600 printers, as well as for the non-chipped Epson Stylus Color 740, 760, 825, 860, 880, 900, 925, 950, 980, 1160 and Stylus Color 750, 1200 & 3000. Canon S900, S9000, S9100 & i950. Prices for the Systems start at $150.00.
For the 9600:
* Initial purchase is the equivalent to 2 sets of cartridges and our Media Street List price for the 9600 cartridge is $79.00 each x 14 = $1106.00
* Initial purchase of the system versus single use cartridges is $1106.00 - $1039.41 = Savings of $66.59
* Subsequent purchases will be at $403.70 for new 16 oz. bottles, which will again get the equivalent of 14 cartridges.
* So it would save $1106.00 less $403.70 = $702.30 for every set of 16 oz. bottles purchased for the system.
OEM's list price for the 9600 cartridge is $112.00 versus our $79.00.
For the 7600:
* Initial purchase is the equivalent to 4 sets of cartridges and our list price for the 7600 cartridge is $49.99 each x 28 = $1399.72.
* Initial purchase of the system versus single use cartridges is $1399.72 - $1039.41 = Savings of $315.45.
* Subsequent purchases will be at $403.70 for new 16 oz. bottles, which will again get the equivalent of 28 cartridges.
* So it would save $1399.72 less $403.70 = $996.02 for every set of 16 oz. bottles purchased for the system.
OEM's list price for the 7600 cartridge is $69.95 versus our $49.99

PRESS RELEASE:
NEW EPSON STYLUS PRO 4000 OFFERS 17-INCH-WIDE PROFESSIONAL-LEVEL PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTING AND SEVEN-COLOR ULTRACHROME INK SYSTEM WITH NEW EIGHT-CHANNEL PRINTHEAD.
10/24/03 - (10/20/03) Epson's newest and most advanced professional-level photographic printer to date is taking the form of a desktop design. The new Epson Stylus(R) Pro 4000 creates exhibit-quality images up to 17 inches in width at speeds that nearly double that of previous Epson Stylus Pro printers. The printer features a new eight-channel printhead and seven-color Epson UltraChrome(TM) pigmented ink system that automatically switches between Matte Black and Photo Black inks for optimum print quality on different media surfaces. It's also packed with several other advanced features designed specifically around the needs of today's professional photographers, graphic designers, commercial printers, GIS mapping, CAD users and more.
"We're confident the Epson Stylus Pro 4000 will be the most popular and best selling Stylus Pro printer yet," said Mark Radogna, senior product manager, professional graphics, Epson. "The combination of this printer's amazing image quality, dramatically faster performance and unique 17-inch-wide media handling, will make it a must-have product for any digital imaging professional -- especially with an estimated street price of only $1,795."
Epson UltraChrome Ink
The Epson Stylus Pro 4000 takes advantage of the company's award-winning Epson UltraChrome ink technology, a vital component to producing exhibit-quality prints that are sellable. This pigment-based formula uses seven individual colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, light cyan, light magenta, light black and switches between one of two other unique black inks) to create an extremely wide gamut of colors that eliminates color casts and enhances midtones. The printer can also be used to print a wide range of black and white photography using its lower density Light Black ink.
Epson UltraChrome Inks are water resistant and offer lightfastness ratings for color images up to 100 years, and greater than 100 years for black and white prints, on specific Epson papers under non-UV glass.(a) When displayed under UV-protected glass, color lightfastness is rated at more than 100 years for all Epson's leading professional papers. The quick drying nature of Epson UltraChrome inks also makes it possible to handle prints the moment they come off the printer.
The Epson Stylus Pro 4000's eight individual channels/slots can handle either 110 ml or 220 ml cartridges, or a combination of both sizes. Each cartridge also uses Epson's Intelligent High-Capacity Ink technology, a feature that stores a variety of information on a memory chip (including ink levels), and communicates the data to the printer whenever the power is turned on.
Automatic Black Ink Mode Switching
In order to produce the highest level of image quality possible on a wide variety of media types, the Stylus Pro 4000 (in its photographic mode) offers two black inks/modes (Photo Black and Matte Black) that are automatically activated by the printer. The printer operates in Photo Black mode whenever the user sets the printer driver for photographic media surfaces such as glossy, luster, or semi-matte. All seven colors are used in Photo Black mode, which includes a combination of Photo Black ink and Light Black ink to produce a D-max rating as high as 2.1. If the user selects a matte, cotton-based or fine art surface in the printer driver, the printer switches to Matte Black mode. This mode also uses all seven colors but uses a combination of Matte Black and Light Black inks to produce a D-max rating as high as 1.69.
Media Handling and Flexibility
Images can be printed on virtually any media type (up to 1.5 millimeters thick) as wide as 17 inches using either rolls or cut sheets. Some of these media include plain paper and specialized Epson papers such as glossy, semi-gloss, luster, matte photographic papers, canvas and fine art papers, commercial-grade proofing media and more. Epson is also offering a complete set of professional-level RGB ICC profiles out of the box for extremely accurate color reproduction on a variety of these surfaces.
A built-in high capacity media tray handles up to 250 sheets of plain letter sized paper or up to 50 cut sheets of photographic media up to 17" x 22". Cut sheet media can be fed automatically using the printer's high-speed cut sheet loading feature. Roll media users can take advantage of BorderFree(TM) printing, a feature that enables users to print over both left and right edges of the media while automatically cutting top and bottom edges for full-bleed prints on all four sides of the paper. A built-in cutter is included to trim prints faster and with greater accuracy and safety than manual techniques. User-adjustable roll media spindles can accept either two- or three-inch media cores.
Sleek Design and Automated Operations
The Epson Stylus Pro 4000 offers a sleek, black and silver metallic design that features an easy-to-use front control panel with backlit displays and ink level indicators. Operation is simplified with six simple buttons located next to the display panel. Setup time and effort is also greatly reduced by a built-in auto head alignment feature. This technology uses a built-in white beam sensor that automatically scans printed alignment patterns created by the printer and then makes automated adjustments if necessary. The same white beam sensor is also used to detect clogged nozzles and automatically activate head cleaning cycles when/if necessary.
High Resolution Printing and Faster Print Speeds
The Epson Stylus Pro 4000 is capable of printing at 2,880 x 1,440 dpi resolution -- resulting in finer blends and smoother photographic transitions. It also uses variable droplets as small as 3.5 picoliters to greatly decrease print time while optimizing photographic quality. Furthermore, Epson's advanced Micro Piezo(R) DX3(TM) ASIC technology controls the printing process to produce consistent image quality and color output from print to print.
The Epson Stylus Pro 4000 prints up to 1.9 times faster than any previous Stylus Pro printer with the help of a new one-inch-wide print head packed with 180 nozzles per channel. Depending on the print mode, users can create an 8" x 10" photo-quality image as fast as one minute, seven seconds -- or create an 8" x 10" at a quality level that surpasses traditional photo labs in approximately seven minutes, eight seconds.
Features for Proofing and Engineering Applications
In addition to creating professional level photographs, the Epson Stylus Pro 4000 is also an ideal solution for pre-press proofing, graphic design, GIS applications, CAD engineers and other advanced digital imaging professionals. A "Dual CMYK" ink mode is available for different applications and media types that enable users to dedicate all eight channels for running two identical sets of cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks simultaneously. The Dual CMYK mode provides an ideal combination of high image quality and even faster print speeds (approximately 1.9 times faster than the printer's photographic mode) for applications such as GIS, CAD or plain paper printing.
The Stylus Pro 4000's ability to create 17" x 22" images is also ideal for graphic designers who typically create two-page mockups for magazines, brochures and other pre-press applications. Since many graphic designers are typically limited to 13" x 19" images on their current printing devices, the Stylus Pro 4000's larger format creates prints with extra room around the borders for handwriting comments or signing off approvals. The printer can also handle C-size images that are commonly used by GIS and CAD users.
An optional Epson Stylus Professional 2.0 software RIP featuring true Adobe(R) PostScript(R) 3 is available for graphic designers. Several other third-party RIPs and workflows will also be compatible with the Epson Stylus Pro 4000 to meet the printing industry's most demanding work environments.
Driver & Connectivity
The Epson Stylus Pro 4000 uses an Epson professional level photographic driver for Macintosh and Windows, allowing for complete density control even when the driver color management feature is turned off. A wide selection of printer interfaces includes one USB (1.1 and 2.0), one IEEE 1394 FireWire(TM) and one Epson expansion slot for installing the optional 10/100 BaseT Ethernet card.
Pricing, Availability and Support
The Epson Stylus Pro 4000 is priced at $1,795 (estimated street price) and will begin shipping in January 2004 through authorized Epson dealers. An optional printer stand/cabinet will also be available for approximately $399.
The Epson Stylus Pro 4000 is supported by the standard Epson Preferred(SM) Limited Warranty. This one-year program includes toll-free advanced telephone access Monday through Friday and typically next-business-day product replacement in the unlikely event of any hardware failure. Epson Preferred Plus Service Plans are also available, offering one or two additional years of protection that can be purchased at any time before the standard one-year warranty expires. PRESS RELEASE:
COREL PAINTER EXPERT ANNOUNCES NEXT COREL PAINTER CLASSES TO BE CONDUCTED ON BOTH COASTS.
10/12/03 - (10/10/03) Renowned artist and author Karen Sperling has announced the date and location of her next Corel Painter 8 Retreat. Karen Sperling's Painter classes have become known as an excellent learning ground for photographers, artists, graphic designers and graphic arts service providers to learn how to quickly and easily use Corel Painter to attract new customer bases and generate exciting new revenue streams. Sperling announced today that the Artistry Corel Painter 8 Retreat will be held October 18th and 19th in New York City and November 8th and 9th in the Southern California area. For more information, go to www.artistrymag.com.
"Ever wonder why the photos you turn into paintings in Corel Painter still look like photos?," asks artist and author Karen Sperling. "The reason has to do with basic art concepts that distinguish paintings from photos. My retreats help digital artists to discover art techniques and Painter tools to turn your portraits and landscapes into true paintings and not just photos with brush strokes."
Turning Photos into Paintings...
Karen Sperling, who wrote the original manual for Painter version 1.0 and has taught the software to digital artists since 1991, will lead the learning experience herself. The seminar will focus upon art techniques and Painter tools that allow students to become near-experts in converting common photographic portraits and landscapes into true and valued paintings, and not just photos with brush strokes. In addition to enjoying the process from an artistic standpoint, many portrait photographers have found transforming photos into paintings to be financially rewarding, as clients revere the look and added-value of "paintered" portraits.
Target Audience...
Attendees don't have to have an art background to take this course and become efficient with Painter, nor is the course limited to professional photographers. Sperling does require a laptop computer, a portable digital camera and a fresh outlook to experience something new and exciting.
Added Sperling, "Traditional artists, you're welcome, too. The Painter techniques would work just the same when starting with a pencil or ink sketch, a watercolor wash, a grisaille, anything. Portrait photographers are making big bucks with their "Paintered" portraits. You can, too! The techniques also apply for making architect's CAD renderings more painterly, creating pet portraits--just about anything that you want to give a painted, vs. photographic look."
About the Seminar...
The class will cover both landscape and portrait painting. And attendees will spend time both inside and outside of the classroom -- taking pictures outside, and going over Painter techniques in the classroom. Attendees don't have to have an art background to take this course. All the information needed will be part of the seminar. Corel Painter 8 is the latest version of Painter and will be the version covered during the Artistry Painter retreat. Class-goers may purchase Painter 8 through Artistry prior to the retreat.
Dates of the Retreat...
The newly announced dates and locations for The Artistry Corel Painter 8 Beginners Retreats are:
New York, NY
October 18 and 19, 2003
Southern California
November 8 and 9, 2003
For more information about the Artistry Corel Painter 8 Retreats, please visit this page: http://www.artistrymag.com/docs/classes.html or contact Karen Sperling at ks@artistrymag.com or ksperling@aol.com.
Karen Sperling Background...
Leading the Artistry Painter Retreat is artist and published author, Karen Sperling. The original Painter expert, Karen wrote the first manuals for Painter versions 1.0 through X2, including the 2.0 Companion, and she demo'd Painter when it debuted at Boston Macworld in August 1991. She also wrote the Painter Complete series of books, published by MIS: Press, a division of Henry Holt. Her Painter tutorials have also been published in Photo Electronic Imaging (PEI) magazine and SBS Digital Design. She currently publishes Artistry Painter tutorials on CDs and as downloadable files.
She has taught Painter since its debut in 1991 to everyone from free-lance artists and photographers to the staffs at major publishers, greeting card companies, design firms and Hollywood movie studios, and at schools including the New School for Social Research in New York. Karen has been the featured Painter speaker at seminars and demonstrations at American Film Institute, the Professional Photographers of America and Seybold.
Karen majored in English at Ithaca College with a minor in art, studying drawing, painting and art history. Her photos, art and illustrations have been published in her books, in magazines and in Artistry, a Painter magazine she founded. Her paintings and commissioned portraits are held in private collections around the world.

PRESS RELEASE:
HP LAUNCHES LARGEST GLOBAL CONSUMER ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN IN COMPANY HISTORY.
10/4/03 - (10/2/03) HP today launched a global consumer marketing campaign under the banner "You +hp" as part of a comprehensive $300 million-plus push. The move follows the company's largest-ever consumer product launch, announced in August, and complements HP's ongoing "(customer) +hp = everything is possible" global brand advertising campaign.
"The digital photography movement is on the verge of becoming the newest, hippest form of self-expression and communication," said Allison Johnson, senior vice president, HP Global Brand and Communications. "Traditional 'capture special moments' photography is giving way to digital 'capture every moment' photography."
The "You +hp" campaign is designed to inspire people to see the picture in everything and showcases HP's complete digital photography lineup - from cameras and printers to PCs, ink and paper. Many of the ads feature the work of amateur photographers equipped with HP digital cameras. Amateur-shot photos also will be used in reality-based cinema films, another first for HP. Running through the holiday season, these film shorts will feature photo essays set to music.
To engage people in the digital photography movement, HP has created an online "YOUstories" photo gallery blog (short for "Web log") and invites consumers to submit and share online photo essays. Consumers are encouraged to visit http://www.hp.com/you to publish their YOUstories and learn more about the art and science behind HP's digital tools.
"The 'You +hp' campaign illustrates the ways HP is transforming the digital photography experience," said Chris Morgan, vice president, sales and marketing, HP Imaging and Printing Group. "HP scientists and engineers have taken out the complexity and reduced the number of steps it takes to capture and print a photo from 57 to three. As digital photography moves mainstream, we hope to inspire people to shoot more, share more, print more and enjoy more using HP digital tools."
Additional Campaign Elements
* The first print ads ran this morning in USA Today with a 24-page color insert, the largest in company history. Additionally, to reach a broad range of consumers, smaller versions of the insert will be included in upcoming issues of consumer lifestyle publications Vogue, Better Homes & Garden, Entertainment Weekly, InStyle, GQ, New York Times Magazine and People, among others.
* Featuring innovative filmmaking techniques, the first television spots debut on NBC shows "Friends" and "Will & Grace" and CBS's "CSI: Crime Scene Investigations" They also will appear on NFL broadcasts and a variety of primetime network and cable programs. Taking a thematic approach, the ads feature the song "Pictures of You" by The Cure.
* Outdoor advertising will take place in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco and include wild postings, billboards and reader boards, such as the Reuters board in Times Square.
* Alongside the online photo essays, the "You +hp" interactive Web site, http://www.hp.com/you, provides consumers with information on HP's digital imaging solutions. The Web site launched this morning. The campaign also includes innovative online advertising that will be featured on numerous consumer-oriented Web sites.
The campaign began today in the United States with the rest of North America, Europe, Asia and Latin America to follow in November. Goodby, Silverstein & Partners created the positioning advertising, with Publicis developing the response and product components.

PRESS RELEASE:
ADOBE RAISES THE DIGITAL IMAGING STANDARD WITH PHOTOSHOP CS.
10/1/03 - (9/29/03) Adobe Systems Incorporated, the leader in network publishing, today announced Adobe® Photoshop® CS, a dramatic full-version upgrade to the professional standard in desktop digital imaging. Available as a key component of the Adobe Creative Suite (also announced today) or as a standalone software application, Photoshop CS is loaded with indispensable new features that help creative professionals craft the highest quality images more quickly and efficiently than ever.
Photoshop CS increases user control, with a redesigned File Browser enhancing search, sorting and sharing capabilities and a new Histogram Palette monitoring changes in the image as they are made. Additional advances include: Match Color, which reads color statistics to quickly achieve a consistent look across a series of photographs; Shadow/Highlight which radically improves the contrast of over- or underexposed digital images; and enhanced ImageReady® CS integration. Photoshop CS also integrates second generation Camera Raw functionality, enabling direct manipulation of raw data in an expanded set of professional-grade digital cameras.
"Photoshop is the gold standard in digital imaging and a catalyst in the continuing digital photography revolution. This release empowers our customers to deliver their highest quality work, faster and more efficiently," said Bryan Lamkin, senior vice president of Digital Imaging and Video Products at Adobe. "For the millions of people worldwide who rely on Photoshop every day, our new CS edition will be a must-have upgrade to their digital imaging desktop."
Features for Graphics and Photography Professionals
For graphic designers, features such as Layer Comps can be used to quickly capture design variations within a single file, then instantly output alternates for client review. Eye-catching typographic designs can also be created by manipulating fully editable text on any path or inside any closed path. Photoshop CS enables photographers to work directly with raw data from even more digital cameras and includes comprehensive editing support for 16-bit color images. Color across images can be synchronized effortlessly with Match Color and Shadow/Highlight correction cures exposure problems while preserving midtones.
"As a digital shooter who not only captures hundreds of shots each day, but also has to meet time-sensitive client demands, I'm excited about the enhancements in Photoshop CS," said Martin Evening, notable London advertising photographer and author. "The more powerful File Browser with integrated and expanded Camera Raw support gives me the speed, personalization and intuitiveness I've been searching for while the Shadow/Highlight correction tool provides an easy way for me to deal with tricky image adjustments. I'm impressed."
Professional Film and Video Features
Photoshop CS removes the guesswork for film and video professionals designing sequences for DVD, video and film. Accurately creating imagery for display on screen has always been a challenge, because non-square pixels, typical of video, cause computer-generated graphics - which use square pixels - to appear distorted. With non-square pixel support in Photoshop CS, video professionals can see the image as it would appear on the destination device and they can create with confidence using preset video-standard sizes, including automatic action-safe and title-safe guides. The 16-bit support in Photoshop CS preserves the rich color palette of film and the product is tightly integrated with Adobe's industry-leading video software, including Adobe Premiere® Pro, Adobe Encore DVD and Adobe After Effects®.
ImageReady Comes of Age
Web designers benefit from the seamless integration of ImageReady CS with Photoshop CS which gives them the ability to prepare graphics more quickly and easily than before. The enhanced user interface features multiple object selection, manipulation and grouping, with Smart Guides to facilitate object alignment. Exporting to Macromedia® Flash SWF can be done in one step with preserved vectors and dynamic text, including embedded fonts. Web professionals can also create leaner, more easily edited HTML, with new controls for nested tables, XHTML and more.
New Adobe Creative Suite
Photoshop CS is a key component of the all new Adobe Creative Suite. The Adobe Creative Suite Premium Edition combines full, new versions of Adobe Photoshop CS with ImageReady CS, Adobe Illustrator CS, Adobe InDesign CS, Adobe GoLive CS, and Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional and introduces the innovative new Version Cue file version manager, to easily track iterations and quickly locate files. The Adobe Creative Suite is a complete design solution that gives today's creative professionals everything they need to create and publish content to print and the Web faster, more easily, and more efficiently than ever.
Pricing and Availability
Photoshop CS for Mac OSX 10.2.4, Microsoft® Windows® 2000 with Server Pack 3 and Windows XP will be available in the fourth (calendar) quarter of 2003 to customers in the United States and Canada through Adobe Authorized Resellers and the Adobe Store at www.adobe.com/store. Adobe Photoshop CS will be available for an estimated street price of US$649. Registered users of any previous version of Adobe Photoshop can upgrade to Adobe Photoshop CS for an estimated street price of US$169. Photoshop CS is also available as part of the Adobe Creative Suite. Registered users of any previous version of Photoshop can upgrade to Adobe Creative Suite Premium Edition for an estimated street price of $749, or the Standard Edition for $549.
